The Show Album Launch @ The Marquee
19th August 2005
Somebody call Kevin Rowland 'cause he's not gonna believe this. A bunch of upstart Aussies have succeeded where he and Dexy's Midnight Runners failed: GYPSIES ARE COOL. Don't believe me? Then you obviously weren't at the Marquee the other night. The place was packed with a crowd that represented just about everyone in Sydney, old and young. There were mohicans, dreadlocks, panama hats, shawls, braces, fur coats...you name it, someone was wearing it.
nothing seemed to faze Waiting for Guinness. After an incomprehensible rant from frontman Harry Tangiers (sounding like Suggs from Madness having a technophobic fit), Sydney's favourite purveyors of Gypsy/Latin/Folk-pop launched into a series of belting tunes from their new record The Show.
'Diamonds' glistened brightly and 'Lost Mariachi' was just lovely (sung by Lino Romeo, resplendent in Mexican mariachi costume) but the highlight came when guest violinist Dr Weltinger joined them for a virtuoso performance of 'El Cascabel'.
As smoke started to rise from his instrument he made 'Flight of the Bumblebee' seem pedestrian.
The only blemish was a (very) lengthy series of encores, but if over-enthusiasm is the only criticism you can level at someone, then they're alright by me.
Kevin Rowland: this lot would pop your brain!
